The issue of recognizing and honoring Jews who saved fellow Jews during the Holocaust was first brought to public attention in the year 2000 through Haim Roth. Haim Roth, a Holocaust survivor from the Netherlands, was rescued by a Jewish man in cooperation with two non Jewish Dutch rescuers. The Jewish rescuer, Max Leons, was recognized by the Dutch government, but was not recognized by the State of Israel or its institutions, including the Israeli government, the Knesset, and Yad Vashem. In contrast, the two non Jewish rescuers were recognized and honored by their country and also received official recognition...

Approximately eighty one years after the outbreak of World War II and the murder of around six million Jews by the Nazi German regime and its collaborators, Holocaust historiography continues to focus primarily on Jews as victims.
Few are aware of another phenomenon: the heroism of Jews who saved fellow Jews during the Holocaust, acting with extraordinary courage and self sacrifice, knowingly risking their own lives even when they had the opportunity to save themselves. Many paid for these actions with their lives...
